Murphy’s Law of Raising Silkies
Winter of 2003
Observations by Nikki & Janet
HATTRICK Silkies
1. Even if they lay an egg, it will freeze and split before you can get to it.
2. By the time you fill the jugs and drag them out and get them watered and fed, it’s time to do it again.
3. There’s always room for one more in the basement.
4. As soon as you shovel the pens and lay the fresh straw, it will snow again.
5. You never dreamed turning the incubator on in November to get a head start would mean you would be raising 80 chicks to adulthood in a kiddie pool in the basement because you couldn’t possibly harden them off in subzero temperatures.
6. The Farmers Almanac predicted this. Since when is the Farmers Almanac EVER right?
7. Basic rules of surviving winter. If it’s yellow don’t eat it, if it’s white shovel it, if it happens to move, dust it off and add it to the basement.
8. If you put the water bowl under the heat lamp it will take a matter of minutes for it to be full of shavings kicked in by heat seeking masses who would prefer to use it as a lounge. If you place it outside the light it will freeze just as fast.
9. No matter how miserable they are, you are twice as miserable.
10. Massive crested head dunkers will develop icicles. Again, add them to the basement.
11. Do snowblowers add to global warming? I hope so.
12. In November 30 degrees feels like 0, in February 0 degrees feels like 30.
13. If you want to see record breaking wind chill factors, just start moving the birds out of the basement.
13. If you think it’s bad now…wait a few minutes.
